Hope Springs Distillery

Lilburn Trigg Myers must be having a good laugh. Myers, the railroad superintendent from Virginia who laid out the present day Lilburn in 1890, will soon have his likeness on hundreds of bottles of vodka produced just feet away from the railroad tracks he knew so well.

Over a year ago Paul Allen and Betsey Dahlberg, husband and wife team, rented 5,000 square feet located just off Main Street in the historic area of the Lilburn. Their intent was to establish Hope Springs Distillery. Paul is a retired engineer who spent 40 years helping businesses improve their manufacturing processes, and Betsey is a retired attorney who spent years helping people  navigate the legal system. Their connection to distilled spirits was their brewing and wine making hobby. Little did the couple realize how well their skills sets would serve them as they tackled one challenge after another during the months of refurbishing and equipping the warehouse space so that it would meet all the specifications required by federal, state and local laws. Throughout this process they have nothing but praise for City officials and the County fire department, which sent a group out to assess how they would deal with a distillery fire.

Now after adjusting equipment and running test batches, they see a light at the end of this winding tunnel. With all the necessary permits in place, Hope Springs is legal and can produce and sell through their distributor. However, Paul and Betsey are not quite ready to simply produce and distribute. They want to meet their customers. So before they go into full production, they will spend the summer working on a tasting room and event space so that when the Governor signs Senate Bill 85 into law, they will be able to open their doors in September to the community for tours, tastings and sales - with Lilburn Trigg Myers there raising his glass!

MAY IS NATIONAL WATER SAFETY MONTH

(Lawrenceville, Ga., May 4, 2017) – Aquatics industry leaders aim to inspire safer water practices to prevent drowning and water-related injuries this summer. With the summer swimming season nearly here, four leading aquatics and related industry organizations are kicking off a month-long campaign to encourage safer water practices. The National Water Safety Month campaign is a joint effort of the American Red Cross, The Association of Pool & Spa Professionals, the National Recreation and Park Association and the World Waterpark Association.

Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation (GCPR) understands the vital importance of public education regarding safer practices for kids and adults in and around the water. GCPR supports the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, and the Simple Water Safety Steps Can Save Lives campaign which educates the public about pool safety. The campaign reminds citizens to:

  • Never leave a child unattended in a pool or spa and always watch your child when he or she is in or near water
  • Teach children basic water safety tips
  • Keep children away from pool drains, pipes and other openings to avoid entrapment
  • Have a telephone close by when you or your family are using a pool or spa
  • If a child is missing, look for him or her in the pool or spa first
  • Share safety instructions with family, friends and neighbors

All GCPR pools are accessible for people with disabilities and offer safe, supervised swimming places for patrons of all ages. For more details on specific amenities and hours of operation or information on facility rentals, visit www.gwinnettparks.com

Medical Building on US 29

Ground has broken and the foundation has been laid for a new medical complex at Mimosa Drive and US 29 Highway. The $5 million project with the building just under 15,000 sq. feet, will be a plasma collection center operated by KEDPLASMA USA. KEDPLASMA is a subsidiary of Kedrion Biopharma, an international company that produces and distributes plasma-derived medicinal products for use in treating severe diseases, disorders and conditions such as hemophilia and immune system deficiencies.

KEDPLASMA USA operates 12 plasma centers in the United States located in Alabama, California, Florida, Mississippi, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. They have plans for two centers in the Atlanta area, one in College Park and the other in the Lilburn-Tucker area. Occupancy by Kedplasma is expected mid-summer, 2017.

The design-build-management company for the project is Stough Development Corporation based in Cincinnati, Ohio.  Tom Trahan, the construction supervisor for the company, indicated that in addition to plasma collection, the complex will also house a training center. He also said that KEDPLASMA USA has an excellent reputation in the biomedical industry both as an employer as well as for product quality. Company vice-president Scott Stough said, “Stough Development Corporation is excited to be investing in the Lilburn community as well as the Community Improvement District. We feel that development along this corridor will continue for years to come and add to an already thriving neighborhood.”

*“As the Page Turns” Lilburn Branch Library Book Discussion Group

If you enjoy reading and talking about books, join us on the first Thursday of the month when we discuss a title that we all have read! As the Page Turns, the Lilburn Branch Book Discussion Group has been meeting since January 2017 on the first Thursday of the month at the Lilburn Branch Library, 4817 Church Street, Lilburn Ga.  The books selected are from all genres including mystery, southern, fantasy, general fiction and other genres.  We have a great time

discussing characterizations, plots, and how we see different things in the stories.

On May 4 we will discuss On the Road by Jack Kerouac. This title is based upon Jack Kerouac’s travels with friends across America. On June 1 we will discuss The Time Keeper by Mitch Albom. In The Time Keeper, the creator of the world’s first clock is punished for trying to measure God’s greatest gift. On July 6 is Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage by Haruki Murakami. In Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage, story of a young man haunted by a great loss unfolds. His dreams and nightmares have unintended consequences for the world around all and of a journey into the past is necessary to mend the present. August 3 we discuss The Cure for Dreaming by Cat Winters. In this story, after being hypnotized during a theatrical performance, modern yet repressed Olivia begins to take interest in the women's suffrage movement.

Please submit story ideas, comments or suggestions to info@lilburncp.com, attention Diana Preston.

If your organization or business would like to submit, send us your item in a Word document by May 25 for publishing around June 3.
